Training/Sign-Up

JCL volunteers complete 2.5 hours of training focused on Read Aloud and One-on-One tutoring techniques. This training has been developed to meet and exceed district and state standards. No previous tutoring experience is necessary! In addition to attending the training session, we ask that you provide a photo identification, two references and a negative TB test.

child and tutor

JCL tutors volunteer at schools, after-school programs and evening programs throughout San Francisco, the East Bay and the Peninsula. Potential tutors choose a site and schedule based on what is most convenient for them.

We typically hold training sessions at the start of the school year (mainly September–October), and after winter break (mainly January–February).

This year several trainings will be held at local synagogues. These sessions are primarily for members who will be participating in special synagogue-led literacy projects. If you are not a member, but would like to attend the training session scheduled there, please contact the regional JCL Program Manager.
